Four Track 10' E.P.

Four Track 10' E.P.

Information

Roy Cousins is primarily known for his vocal group the Royals. But working with Scientist in his prime in the early 1980s he was able to spin out some formidable versions to his excellent vocal productions. These four cuts are awesome. Seismic and heavy - check em out.

Scientist/Roy Cousins — Four Track 10' E.P.

What a great and unexpected release this is, a dub excursion by the sadly underrepresented mixing engineer Scientist. I am pleased to report that not only are they all new to me, but I am also unfamiliar with the original vocal tracks that these dubs version, though I am reliably informed are by Don Carlos, Horace Andy and Gold.

They are exactly as you'd imagine prime Scientist mixes to sound following, as they do, in the rich classical dub tradition of King Tubby and Jammy's. I have been playing all four tracks over and over, though all are equally strong if I had to pick a favourite I would probably choose the forth track - tomorrow it might the third.

It would be nice to think there are enough similar tracks to justify a full CD release of Scientist tracks - and possibly another featuring the vocal originals?

Toussaint L'Ouverture sounds like a version of Horace's 'Something On My Mind' from the 'Horace Andy - Showcase' lp on Vista produced by Tad Dawkins. A great album.

This is a killer dub 10 inch.

One side is two different dubs of the title track "Plantation" by Don Carlos.
There was a showcase album with that title issued on CSA Records, featuring Don Carlos & Gold.

The flip side has a dub of "Pretty Baby" by Gold from the same "Plantation" album.

It also has a dub of "Something's On My Mind" from Horace Andy's "Showcase" album released on Tad's (later re-issued by Vista Sounds).

Thanks Pressure Sounds for another fantastic release.

In 1971, despite his run of hits, Bunny Lee was still having to support himself with freelance producing at Dynamic Sounds, but by 1974 he was fully independent and poised to dominate Jamaican music in the mid 70’s. The tracks on this compilation capture that moment of transition, when the smaller ghetto producers were taking over from the older musical establishment.
Listening to Bunny’s unreleased master tapes, what bursts out of the speakers is the energy and excitement of the whole production process, from the studio chatter of the musicians to the sonic experiments at the mixing desk. These pioneering steps in deejaying and dub were the launch pad for remix culture and the core production techniques of today, a creative explosion that altered the shape of our popular culture.
