Lee Perry/Various Artists — The Return Of Sound System Scratch

matthias banaschewski, Jul 04, 2011
I have been a Lee Perry Devotee long before I got addicted to Reggae Music.
And the Pressure Sounds Staff have released over the years excellent Reissues.
The new THE RETURN OF SOUND SYSTEM SCRATCH tops everything!
The previous Release of SOUND SYSTEM SCRATCH was already a Revelation
of the highest order, as it was filled with original sound system exclusives for the
70ties Dancehall. We nowaday Listeners would have been never be able to listen to
that stuff if there weren`t Pressure Sounds with their excellent Reissue Programm.
What makes the followup even better is the throughout excellent sonic condition
of the tracks (which were not so on the first edition due to the natural bad condition
of some acetates) and the fact, that this time we have a mixture of exclusive
Discoplates of spine and skin shivering Perry Tracks and never before released
Roots Songs like Jimmy Rileys "Darkness in the City", Candy McKenzies funky
"Long Enough" or the excellent Leo Graham track. Or listen to the amazing Dubplates of for example Bob Marley`s Natural Mystic Song (Natural Dub) or J.
Byles The Long Way (Long Dub). And there is so much more to discover!!
I kiss your feet Master Lee Rainford Perry for letting Pressure Sounds explore
your Treasure Trove of Black Ark Recordings, which will forever be THE HOLY
GRAIL OF ROOTSREGGAE. And I hope there is more to come of the truly magic
Sounds and sheer sonic Madness of Lee Perry.

  • Granville Williams & His Orchestra - WailinGranville Williams & His OrchestraWailin

Storming big band ska from Granville Williams with 'Wailin'. 'Old McDonald' is actually excellent as well.

Rousing Maytals call and response on the A side with 'My Daily Food' and "One Look' on the flipside. Classic Maytals.

  • Aubley Williams & His Orchestra - String of PearlsAubley Williams & His Orchestra String of Pearls

Two slices of Jamaican big band jazz. Glen Millers 'String of Pearls' on the A side. The Anton Karas composition on the flipside from the movie 'The Third Man'. Great stuff.

  • Eddie Perkins & Patsy - Take These Chain From My HeartEddie Perkins & PatsyTake These Chain From My Heart

On the A side 'Take these chains from my heart' has more than a nod to the Hank Williams classic of the same name. Has a lovely harmonica half way through.
'I Am Blue' on the flipside is pretty good.

  • Freddie McGregor - Bobby BabylonFreddie McGregorBobby Babylon

Freddie McGregors classic Studio One set. Re-pressed in Jamaica at Studio One with the original stampers. Sleeve is also a re-print from the original so it has the characteristics of A Jamaican sleeve. Its new but looks slightly worn in places.

  • The Cables - What kind of worldThe CablesWhat kind of world

The Cables led by Keble Drummond at their Studio One best. Great album. Recently repressed in Jamaica by Studio one. The sleeves have also been made in Jamaican so has some slight wear evident around the edges of the sleeve. Although it does say on the back sleeve that it was made in the UK!! Check the sound clips for sound quality before you buy. Overall its pretty good in terms of sound.
